Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta, located in northern Botswana, is one of the world’s largest inland deltas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed where the Okavango River spills into the Kalahari Desert, this unique ecosystem spans between 6,000 to 15,000 square kilometers, depending on seasonal flooding. Unlike typical deltas that lead to the sea, the Okavango’s waters evaporate or transpire, creating a lush oasis teeming with wildlife.
The delta’s diverse habitats—permanent swamps, seasonally flooded grasslands, and numerous islands—support a rich array of flora and fauna. It is home to the “Big Five” game animals: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses, and African buffalo, as well as over 400 bird species, including the African fish eagle and the endangered wattled crane. This biodiversity makes the Okavango Delta a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts and offers exceptional safari experiences.
