Krokovango Crocodile Farm
Krokovango is a major tourist attraction, home to more than 7,000 Nile crocodiles, and draws visitors from around the world eager to experience the best of the African Okavango Delta. Conveniently located just 10 kilometers from Shakawe Airport and near both the Caprivi Strip and Etosha, Krokovango makes for the perfect stop along your journey. Situated approximately 12 kilometers southeast of Shakawe in Botswana’s North-West District—on the panhandle of the Okavango Delta – Krokovango Crocodile Farm serves as a key site for crocodile conservation and ecotourism. The farm acts as a refuge for Nile crocodiles, often rescuing individuals affected by human-wildlife conflict. It also operates a high-impact breeding program, producing 4,000 to 5,000 eggs annually and housing over 10,000 crocodiles of varying life stages.
Visitors can take part in guided tours to observe crocodiles ranging from hatchlings to massive adults – some reaching nearly five meters in length. These tours include expert commentary on crocodile biology, behavior, life cycles, and the farm’s conservation practices. Krokovango also features Botswana’s first constructed treatment wetland, which not only treats wastewater from the farm but also supports a thriving micro-ecosystem rich with aquatic birds, such as Pel’s Fishing Owl, and invertebrates.
In addition to its conservation efforts, Krokovango offers a complete tourist experience with crocodile tours, boat trips, fishing opportunities, and exotic birdwatching. On-site amenities include overnight accommodation, a restaurant, and a curio shop. Krokovango is truly conservation in action—combining sustainable design, educational experiences, and impactful wildlife rescue and breeding operations.
