Three Dikgosi Monument
The Three Dikgosi Monument is a prominent bronze sculpture located in the Central Business District of Gaborone, Botswana. Unveiled in 2005, the monument features 5.4-meter (18-foot) tall statues of three esteemed dikgosi (tribal chiefs): Khama III of the Bangwato, Sebele I of the Bakwena, and Bathoen I of the Bangwaketse. These leaders played pivotal roles in Botswana’s history, notably in 1895 when they journeyed to Great Britain to petition for the Bechuanaland Protectorate to remain under direct British rule, thereby preventing its incorporation into Cecil Rhodes’s British South Africa Company and Southern Rhodesia.
The monument stands as a testament to the chiefs’ dedication to preserving their people’s autonomy and has become a significant cultural and historical landmark in Gaborone. It is among the most visited tourist destinations in the city, offering visitors insight into Botswana’s rich heritage.
