John Mackenzie School (Preschool, Primary ,Secondary)
John Mackenzie School, established in 1899, is a historic educational institution in Francistown, Botswana, providing education from preschool through primary and secondary levels. The school was founded by Reverend Nelson Fogarty of the Railway Mission, who sought to address the lack of educational opportunities for children in the region. Initially starting with two students in a church hall (later St. Patrick’s Church), the school quickly grew, enrolling twelve students by its first month of operation.
Originally named Francistown European School, the institution was renamed John Mackenzie School in 1958 to honor John Mackenzie, the first Deputy Commissioner of Bechuanaland and a missionary with the London Missionary Society. Mackenzie played a key role in the establishment of Bechuanaland as a British Protectorate, highlighting his influence on the region’s history.
Recognizing the need for a secondary school to serve the growing and diverse community of Northern Botswana, John Mackenzie School expanded to include a secondary section in 1994. Today, the school remains committed to providing high-quality education, fostering academic excellence, and nurturing the development of its students across all levels of learning.
