Botswana Open University (BOU)

Botswana Open University (BOU) was established as a result of the transformation of the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL), reflecting the country’s commitment to enhancing higher education accessibility and quality. This transformation was in alignment with the recommendations outlined in the Tertiary Education Policy, which emphasized the need for a comprehensive national institution focused on distance education.

The primary goal of BOU is to meet the growing demand for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) at the tertiary level, offering opportunities for individuals across Botswana and beyond to access higher education. Unlike its predecessor, BOU is an autonomous institution that develops, offers, and accredits its own university-level programmes without reliance on external collaborative partners.

The creation of BOU addresses the increasing need for flexible, accessible education options for individuals who might not be able to pursue traditional full-time, on-campus study. It caters to a wide range of learners, including working professionals, those in remote areas, and those seeking to enhance their skills and qualifications while balancing other commitments.
