Department of Information Technology (DIT)

The Department of Information Technology (DIT) is a pivotal government department under Botswana’s Ministry of Communications and Innovation. It plays a central role in driving the country’s digital transformation agenda by providing strategic leadership, technical expertise, and centralized ICT services to government ministries and departments.

Service offered:

• Deliver secure, efficient, and cost-effective ICT infrastructure and services to the public sector.

• Promote the adoption and use of information technology in government operations to enhance service delivery.

• Formulate and implement national IT policies, standards, and guidelines.

• Support e-Government initiatives aimed at improving access to government services.

Core functions:

1. ICT Infrastructure Management
   DIT manages the Government Data Network (GDN), which ensures secure and reliable connectivity between government offices across the country.

2. System Development and Integration
   The department develops, implements, and maintains enterprise-wide applications and digital platforms used by ministries and departments.

3. Technical Support and Advisory
   It provides technical support and consultancy services in areas such as systems analysis, network design, and IT procurement.

4. Cybersecurity and Risk Management
   DIT enforces cybersecurity protocols to safeguard government information systems against threats and vulnerabilities.

5. Capacity Building
   It supports ICT training and development initiatives for public servants to promote digital literacy and competence within the public sector.
