Botswana National Museum
The Botswana National Museum, also known as the National Museum and Art Gallery, is the country’s premier custodian of cultural and natural heritage—preserving art, history, indigenous biodiversity, and significant national landmarks. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1967 and opened to the public in 1968, the museum is located in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. It is a multidisciplinary institution that encompasses the National Art Gallery, the Octagon Gallery, and, since November 2007, the National Botanical Garden.
The museum features a wide range of exhibits, including traditional crafts, local contemporary art, historical artifacts, and indigenous plant displays. It also includes interactive zones designed to engage children and young learners. Through its exhibitions, educational outreach, and guided tours, the Botswana National Museum plays a vital role in cultural education and national identity.
Among its key features is the National Botanical Garden, which showcases Botswana’s native flora and promotes conservation awareness. The museum is also deeply committed to cultural heritage stewardship, working to preserve and interpret the nation’s rich historical and artistic traditions. Furthermore, it actively supports educational and public programmes aimed at engaging communities, enhancing cultural appreciation, and fostering lifelong learning.
