The Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) is a political party in Botswana that was founded on 29 May 2010by a group of Members of Parliament and politicians who broke away from the long-time ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) due to disagreements with its leadership at the time. Its earliest leaders included Gomolemo Motswaledi, and the party’s initial mission was to challenge what its founders viewed as undemocratic governance and to promote a more inclusive, united, and democratic Botswana through constitutional means.
Today, the Botswana Movement for Democracy remains an active political actor in Botswana’s multiparty system, advocating for governance reforms and representing a segment of the electorate seeking alternatives to both the long-dominant ruling party and other opposition formations.
