The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) is a major political coalition in Botswana formed in November 2012 to unite opposition forces and offer a credible alternative to the long‑dominant Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). It brings together several political parties, traditionally including the Botswana National Front (BNF), Botswana People’s Party (BPP) and, at times, others such as the Alliance for Progressives (AP) — under one banner to consolidate opposition support and contest elections as a single bloc.
Ideologically, the UDC is generally positioned on the centre‑left to left‑wing of Botswana’s political spectrum, promoting social democratic and progressive policies aimed at broader participation in governance, economic transformation, social justice, and democratic reforms. Historically, it has campaigned on issues such as increased job creation, healthcare improvement, constitutional reform, and expanding economic opportunities, reflecting a platform of inclusive growth and accountability in government.
Since its creation, the UDC has become the leading force in Botswana, challenging the BDP’s decades‑long rule, highlighting the coalition’s central role in the country’s evolving democratic landscape.
