Tsodilo Hills

Tsodilo Hills
Location: Tsodilo,

Tsodilo Hills, located in north-western Botswana near the Namibian border in the Okavango Sub-District, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich cultural and historical significance. This unique area comprises massive quartzite rock formations rising dramatically from the Kalahari Desert, encompassing the Male, Female, and Child hills. Archaeological evidence indicates that Tsodilo has been inhabited for over 100,000 years, making it one of the world’s oldest historical sites. The hills are adorned with over 4,500 rock paintings, offering a remarkable record of human settlement and spiritual expression spanning millennia. Local communities, including the San and Hambukushu people, regard Tsodilo as a sacred place, rich in oral traditions and spiritual significance.

Visitors to Tsodilo Hills can explore various walking trails, such as the Rhino Trail, Lion Trail, and Cliff Trail, which provide access to numerous rock art sites and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Guided tours are available, often led by local San guides who offer invaluable insights into the history, culture, and spiritual importance of the area. The site also features a small museum complex that provides additional context and information about the hills’ significance.
