Philip Matante Airport
PG Matante International Airport, formerly known as Francistown International Airport, is a key air transport hub located just west of Francistown, Botswana’s second-largest city. Named after the late politician Phillip Gaonwe Matante, the airport serves both civilian and military purposes and plays a vital role in northern Botswana’s connectivity. It is operated under the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), with its current civilian terminal inaugurated in 2011. The facility replaced the older terminal, which is now occupied by the Botswana Defence Force. The airport sits approximately 1,000 meters above sea level and features two asphalt runways, with the main runway measuring about 2,230 meters. Its strategic location allows it to serve as a gateway to nearby mining towns and tourism areas such as the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and Northern Tuli Game Reserve.
The airport offers a variety of passenger services including customs and immigration, security screening, baggage handling, car rental, free Wi-Fi, currency exchange, banking facilities, and restaurants. While it does not have jet bridges, passengers are accommodated through a well-maintained terminal where they walk directly to the aircraft on the tarmac. Air Botswana operates regular flights from PG Matante International Airport to destinations such as Gaborone and Johannesburg, making it an essential regional link for business travelers, government officials, and tourists. Its modern control tower and improved infrastructure ensure safety and efficiency for both domestic and regional operations.
