Nata Sanctuary
Established in 1992, the Nata Bird Sanctuary is a community-managed reserve spanning approximately 230 square kilometers on the northeastern edge of Botswana’s Sowa Pan, about 20 kilometers south of the town of Nata. The sanctuary was created with the primary goal of preserving wildlife, particularly avian species, and serves as one of Africa’s key breeding grounds for flamingos. During favorable conditions, the sanctuary attracts hundreds of thousands of lesser and greater flamingos, along with pelicans and over 165 other bird species. In addition to its rich birdlife, the sanctuary is home to various mammals, including antelopes, zebras, jackals, and more. Visitors can explore the area through self-guided tours or arrange guided excursions, especially during the rainy season when a 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to challenging road conditions.
