MVA Fund

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund Botswana provides compensation in the form of benefits to individuals affected by road crashes within the country. The Fund’s mandate includes the provision of medical care and rehabilitation, loss of income and support, funeral and incidental expenses, and enhancement of the quality of life for road accident victims. Additionally, it offers third-party insurance coverage to drivers and owners of motor vehicles, promotes road safety, and supports injury prevention initiatives.

The Botswana Motor Vehicle Accident Fund commenced operations on 1 January 1987. Its establishment was prompted by the insurance industry’s announcement of planned increases in third-party premiums by up to 600 percent, citing escalating road traffic accidents as the cause. Concerned about the affordability of these premium hikes for most motorists, the Government intervened to create a sustainable compensation scheme and to stabilize insurance costs.

The Fund handles all matters related to its core functions, ensuring comprehensive support for victims of road accidents and fostering safer roads throughout Botswana.
