Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve
The Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve, encompassing approximately 3,900 square kilometers, is situated in northeastern Botswana. This protected area includes the western portion of Ntwetwe Pan, characterized by expansive grasslands and acacia woodlands. Established in 1970 as a game reserve and later expanded in 1992 to a national park covering about 4,900 square kilometers, the reserve offers a unique landscape formed from the remnants of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. During the wet season, the reserve becomes a haven for wildlife, hosting large herds of zebra and wildebeest that migrate westward to the Boteti River region. The area also supports a variety of predators, including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, as well as significant birdlife such as pelicans and flamingos. Visitors can engage in activities like game drives, birdwatching, and guided walks to explore the diverse ecosystems and rich history of the region.
