Kgale Hill Public Park

Kgale Hill Public Park
Location: Gaborone

Kgale Hill Public Park, nicknamed “The Sleeping Giant”, is one of Botswana’s most scenic urban natural parks and the highest point in Gaborone at 1,287m above sea level. Located near Game City Mall, the park is a favourite among locals and tourists for hiking, climbing, picnics, and enjoying panoramic views of Gaborone City and the Gaborone Dam – especially breathtaking at sunrise.

The park features three hiking trails, with a moderately challenging route taking around 2.5 hours round-trip. The trail includes granite rocks, scenic plateaus, and a summit view of the city, A1 highway, Mokolodi Nature Reserve, and Gaborone Dam. Hikers may encounter baboons along the way. The trail is suitable for children 10 years and older.

Kgale Hill also hosts the annual PPC King of the Hill 15km race, organized with the Gaborone Runners Club. Culturally, it is known as “Kgalewood”, after being a filming location for The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, with a government-backed effort to develop it into a tourist attraction.

The park is best visited on cool weekend mornings, especially in November and December when the area is lush from recent rains. No guide is necessary, and the walking path is clearly visible.
