Gaborone Dam

Gaborone Dam
Location: Gaborone

Gaborone Dam, situated just south of Botswana’s capital, is a vital water source and a growing hub for eco-tourism and outdoor recreation. Its scenic beauty and diverse activities make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. For a memorable experience, consider visiting during sunset. The view over the water is breathtaking, offering a perfect end to your day at the dam. The dam is located along the Gaborone–Lobatse road, approximately 10 km south of Gaborone’s city center. Access points include the Naledi side entrance leading to the yacht club and the Sanitas road entrance near the dam wall. For the dam wall area, obtaining a permit from the Water Utilities Corporation is necessary.

Activities at Gaborone Dam include Fishing; Birdwatching; Picnicking and Scenic Walks; Boating; and Yacht Club. Swimming is prohibited due to the presence of crocodiles and the risk of bilharzia (schistosomiasis), a parasitic disease.

Access to certain areas, like the dam wall, requires permits from the Water Utilities Corporation. Maintain a safe distance from wildlife and stay vigilant, especially when near the water’s edge. Access to the dam is generally free, but specific areas may have entry fees. The dam is open to the public year-round; however, it’s advisable to visit during daylight hours for safety. Amenities include picnic spots, walking trails, and boating facilities.
