The Botswana Stock Exchange Limited (BSE) is the country’s sole stock exchange, mandated to operate and regulate the securities market while fostering capital formation and investment opportunities. Its origins trace back to 1989, when it began as the Botswana Share Market (BSM), an informal trading platform with only five listed companies and one brokerage firm, Stock Brokers Botswana Ltd (SBB), which facilitated all trading activities. Recognizing the need for a more formalized market structure, Parliament passed legislation in September 1994 to transform the BSM into a fully-fledged stock exchange, leading to the official establishment of the Botswana Stock Exchange in November 1995. This transition marked a significant milestone in Botswana’s financial sector, laying the foundation for a regulated, transparent, and sustainable capital market.
Over time, the BSE has undergone major structural and administrative reforms aimed at strengthening its independence and governance. In 1998, the exchange’s administration was managed by Ernst & Young, until July 2001 when a full-time Chief Executive Officer was appointed to spearhead its autonomy and growth. By April 2003, the BSE had become fully independent, discontinuing the secretarial role of Ernst & Young Botswana. Since then, the BSE has positioned itself as a key player in Botswana’s financial ecosystem, offering a platform for equity and debt listings, facilitating corporate financing, and providing investors with diverse instruments for wealth creation. Today, the BSE continues to play a crucial role in driving economic development, deepening financial markets, and aligning with global standards of transparency and efficiency.
