Athlone Hospital (Public)
Athlone Hospital, also known as Lobatse Hospital, is a government-operated district hospital located in Lobatse, Botswana. Established in 1929, it is one of the country’s oldest hospitals and serves as a teaching facility for medical graduates. The hospital operates under the Botswana Ministry of Health and collaborates with the University of Botswana. The hospital offers a wide range of medical services through various departments, including internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, accident and emergency, radiology, dentistry, and ophthalmology.
In 1990, Athlone Hospital launched a health promotion initiative using pictures to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, which has since expanded into a national and international program. Despite its long history of service, the hospital has faced challenges with maintenance. In 2019, Dr. Alfred Madigele, the then Minister of Health and Wellness, acknowledged these issues and promised to find solutions to improve the facility.
Athlone Hospital remains an essential provider of healthcare services to the Lobatse community and surrounding areas.
