The Botswana People’s Party (BPP) is one of Botswana’s oldest political parties, established in 1960 (originally as the Bechuanaland People’s Party) during the colonial era. It was the first mass political party in the country, formed to advocate for independence, democratic rights, and national self‑determination under leaders such as Kgalemang T. Motsete, Philip Matante, and Motsamai Mpho.
Ideologically, the BPP is rooted in democratic socialism and Pan‑Africanism, promoting principles such as equality, social justice, freedom of expression and association, economic empowerment, and non‑discrimination. Historically, it was a pioneer in mobilising grassroots opposition to colonial rule and later to the dominant ruling party after independence. Though internal splits and political shifts have influenced its electoral fortunes over time, the party has remained active in Botswana’s political landscape and has participated in broader opposition coalitions such as the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) to strengthen its influence.
The BPP continues to uphold its long‑standing commitment to Pan‑African unity, democratic governance, and socioeconomic reforms as part of its vision for Botswana’s political and social development.
